引言

王国维《人间词话》云：“古今之成大事业、大学问者，必经过三种之境界：‘昨夜西风凋碧树。独上高楼，望尽天涯路。’此第一境也。‘衣带渐宽终不悔，为伊消得人憔悴。’此第二境也。‘众里寻他千百度，蓦然回首，那人却在灯火阑珊处。’此第三境也。”当前抗击新冠病毒的战役也是一件“大事业”，有成百上千的传染病学家为了研究治愈方案殚精竭虑，有成千上万的白衣卫士为了救治病人奋不顾身，还有亿万各行各业的人为了防控疫情日夜工作，相信只要全国上下戮力同心，在经历了热切期盼和艰苦抗争之后，我们“蓦然回首”，必见九转功成。希望我们永远不要忘记那些为了保护我们而“不计报酬，无论生死”的人。

本期《华章英韵》将辛弃疾的《青玉案·元夕》并张淑玥同学的英译和演唱送给大家，祝所有人弃疾、平安。让我们在这个没有庆祝和烟花的元夕，点亮烛光，哀悼逝者，祈望春天。

Wang Guowei says in Talks on Tz’u in the Human World: “Throughout the ages all those who have been highly successful in great ventures and in the pursuit of learning must of necessity have [successively] experienced three kinds of ching-chieh. ‘Last night the west wind shriveled the green-clad trees, / Alone I climb the high tower / To gaze my fill along the road to the horizon.’ expresses the first state (ching). ‘My clothes grow daily more loose, yet care I not. / For you am I thus wasting away in sorrow and pain.’ expresses the second state. ‘I sought her in the crowd a hundred, a thousand times./ Suddenly with a turn of the head [I saw her], / That one there where the lamplight was fading.’ expresses the third state.” (Translation by Rickett, Wang Kuo-wei’s Jen-chien Tz’u-hua, 1977: 50) The battle against the novel coronavirus is also a “great venture”. Hundreds of epidemiologists are sparing no effort in developing therapies. Thousands of doctors and nurses are dealing with the infected patients at the peril of their own lives. Millions of people from all walks of life are working day and night to contain the epidemic. We believe that with the joint resolute efforts of our government and people, “suddenly with a turn of the head”, we’ll see the hard-earned victory after keen anticipation and painstaking efforts. Let's never forget those who have been willing to fight for us at all costs. 

This issue of Chinese Verse in English Rhyme presents to you “Green Jade Table: Lantern Festival” by Xin Qiji and its English translation and singing by Zhang Shuyue, wishing you could keep away from illness (Qiji) and stay healthy. On this festive night without celebrations and fireworks, let's light up the candles to mourn for the dead and pray for the coming of spring.

青玉案·元夕

东风夜放花千树，更吹落，星如雨。

宝马雕车香满路，凤箫声动，玉壶光转，一夜鱼龙舞。

蛾儿雪柳黄金缕，笑语盈盈暗香去。

众里寻他千百度，暮然回首，那人却在，灯火阑珊处。

At night the east breeze flowers thousands of trees,

And brings showers of glowing stars down the streets.

Fine steeds and carved carriages perfume the way;

The music of phoenix flute spreads away.

The moon, like a jade-pot, turning its ray,

Through the night fish and dragon lanterns sway.

 

With moth jades, snow willows and gold threads,

A girl passes chuckling, leaving a trail of scents.

A thousand times I search for her, but in vain.

Oh, on a sudden turn,

There she is, there she is

In the dim light of a lantern.

译者说

《青玉案·元夕》是辛弃疾的代表作品之一，在中国古今众多诗词之中，独标一格，别具深意。这首词是辛弃疾于宋淳熙元年或二年任职临安时所作。当时，强敌压境，国力日衰，而南宋统治阶级却沉迷享乐，毫无作为。洞察形势的他却报国无路，用武无地。

这首词描写了临安城元夕灯会奢华热闹的场景。上阕通过张扬的彩灯，绽放的烟花，歌舞声动，车马喧哗，渲染了元宵夜晚的繁华与热闹。下阕，词人看到了飘然独行的意中人。国难当头，朝廷百姓都沉迷歌舞享乐，无人为风雨飘摇中的国家忧虑，只有“那人”孤高淡泊，超群脱俗。而“那人”实指的是词人自己，寄托他忧国忧民，不愿与世俗同流合污的高尚品质！

“Green Jade Table: Lantern Festival” is one of Xin Qiji's representative works. Among many ancient and modern Chinese poems, it has a unique style and profound meaning. This Ci was written when the poet was in Lin’an in the first or second year of the Song Chunxi era (1174-1189). At that time, the strong enemy was invading the state, and the national strength was on the decline. However, the ruling class in the Southern Song Dynasty was indulged in pleasure and had done nothing. He saw the situation clearly, however had no way to serve the country.

This Ci described the scene of luxurious bustle on the Lantern Festival in Lin'an. Through colored lanterns, beautiful fireworks, songs and dances, and the noise of horses and carriages, the first part described the prosperous night on the Lantern Festival. In the second half, the author saw the woman wandering alone. In the face of national disasters, the royal court and ordinary people were indulged in music and enjoyment, and no one was worried about the troubled country. Only “that woman” was indifferent and aloof, standing there other worldly. The “woman” actually refers to the poet himself with noble characters of worrying about the country and the people, and being unwilling to associate himself with those indulging people.

张淑玥，擅长作曲和钢琴演奏等，长江大学研三学生，曾应邀赴美国俄亥俄州立大学访学，兼任长江大学外国语学院辅导员、外国语学院研究生会主席，多次获长江大学研究生一等、二等奖学金，长江大学“优秀研究生”称号等。在London Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Sciences，European Journal of Applied Linguistics Studies等国际期刊发表“On the English Translation of Song Ci-Poetry under the ‘Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria’ — A Case Study of ‘Green Jade Table: Lantern Festival’”, “A Survey of the English Translation of Song Ci Poetry from the Perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis”, “Research on Translation of Petroleum Technical English from the Perspective of Eco-Translatology”, “Eco-Translatology Perspective on the English Translation of Subtitles in the Documentary Eight Hundred Years of Chu State” 等学术论文。

 

Zhang Shuyue, a third year graduate student from Yangtze University and a visiting graduate to Ohio State University, is skilled in composition and piano performance. She served as a counselor of undergraduates and the chairwoman of the Graduate Association in the School of Foreign Studies, Yangtze University. She won the first and second class scholarships for graduate students of Yangtze University several times, and was awarded “Excellent Graduate Student” of Yangtze University.
