逝将不复疑;
The decline and boom are not fixed;
They are all alternate betwixt.
Shao Ping sows melons now herein;
He was once th' Dongling duke of Qin.
Alternate are the cold and heat,
Also the same' s the life in sleet.
Wise people understand the sense,
I no longer suspect it hence.
A goblet o' wine's soon passed to me,
Thus day and night I wine with glee.

Drinking Wine (II)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
It's said that good rewards good an' ill does ill;
Princes Boyi an' Shuqi starved in west hill.
If good and ill' ve no retribution due;
Then would that become an empty talk too?
Ninety, Rong took a rope as the belt, poor!
The plight hungry and cold surpassed prime sure.
In poor blight he'd kept morality high,
Or how could he last his good fame for aye ?

Drinking Wine (III)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Confucianism has waned for a thousand years 'bout;
Selfish each one's stints his own emotion no doubt.
Having wine he does not drink it for fear of blame,
Caring only about the worldly empty fame.
Therefore I'm sure to value myself anymore,
Could it be that it is mere what I live for?
How many days and years in human life can last?
Time makes people startle for it flies very fast.
You're busy in the lifetime for fortunes and fame
Finally in thy life, what do you want to claim?

Drinking Wine (IV)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
An astray bird's unrest in fright;
At sunset alone she's in flight.
Flying all around without rest ,
The bird sadly chirps night by night.
Crying to think of somewhere far,
To and fro she flies for rest site.
By chance she finds th' lone pine afar,
Shuting wings she does there alight.
In the strong gale trees can't survive,
But this lush pine alone does thrive.
Settling here she will ever stay;
Forever she'll not fly away.

Drinking Wine (V)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
I built my house in people's haunt;
Hearing not wheel an' hoof noise I vaunt .
Someone asked me why I can do.
If thy heart's far you can do too.
I pick mums by east fence at will;
Carefree I watch the southern hill.
The hill air is fresh day and night;
Together birds home back in flight.
There is the truth in it,that's yea;
I try to tell thee, but words fail me.

Drinking Wine (VI)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
The conduct behaves countless different ways.
But who knows which is wrong and which is right?
If to compare with the wrong the right tries,
Seem the same to defame and to fame might.
In late reigns of Xia, Shang an' Zhou these are more,
But a sage would never do like that sure.
Do not marvel at worldly fools at will;
You'd follow the Four Hermits in Shang Hill.

Drinking Wine (VII)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
The autumn chrysanths are so fair in view;
It is nice to pluck their flowers with dew.
The chrysanths wine tastes better still;
Stay away from the worldly love I will.
With one stroke I emptied the glass of wine;
One more I alone fill th' flagon of mine.
When the sun sets creatures start to rest still;
Returning to woods birds chirp with the trill.
In th' Eastern Bower I sing in delight,
And let me spend my lifetime freely quite.

Drinking Wine (VIII)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
In eastern garden grows a thriving pine;
Its beauty's hid by weeds an' many a vine .
When the heavy frost fade other plants green.
It still stands alone an' high branches are seen.
In woods a pine can't be found to outstand.
Nothing but the pine is peerless and grand.
I hang the flagon on the bough so chill.
O'erlooking it sometimes I'm gladder still.
My whole lifetime is just like a dream sound,
In this world,why do I make myself bound?

Drinking Wine (IX)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Hearing someone knock at my door at dawn,
Not clad so well, to ope the door I yawn.
“Who is knocking, please and whom do you find?”
It's an old farmer who is nice and kind.
With wine he came from far to regard me,
An' said I should not live in seclusion free.
He said that it's not worth wearing rags here,
For noble I'd not live in th' shack each year.
It's best to get along well with peers too.
Don't be serious, and do as others do.
Thank you a lot for what you said just now.
I'm a natural loner anyhow.
Officialdom's something to learn in deed
Untrue to duty, officials must heed.
At this time let us have a happy swill,
Under no circumstances drive back I will.

Drinking Wine (X)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
I went on an official trip sans glee,
As far as th' coast of the east China sea.
Long an' perilous the route was far away;
I oft met gales and billows on the way.
What let me go on the task unlucky?
It seemed for the starvation that drove me.
I tried my best to dine a fuller meal,
There was a bit left that was not to deal.
I am afraid this will ruin my fame;
To give up official retreat I claim.

Drinking Wine (XI)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Folks said that Yan Hui was a humane man,
Also that Lord Rong did good as he can.
The former was short-lived an' poor life he led,
The latter was starved till he was dead.
They left ever-lasting good fames behind,
But they were pure in a whole life folks find.
One will know nothing once passing away
So alive he should live well in his way.
You should take a good care of your own health,
After death you will have no fame and wealth.
Why is a naked-burial nothing so bad?
To return to nature you should be glad.

壮节忽失时;
Drinking Wine (XII)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
长公曾一仕,Zhang Zhi was someone for many a year;
Due to his justice he lost his career.
Only for that reason he shut his door,
And would be sure an official no more.
Yang Lun retreated to live beside th' glade,
Here showed his moral honor as jade.
Once th' official position I abate,
It makes no sense for me to hesitate.
What can I say really then? Do you see?
For a long time the world has cheated me.
Get rid of falsehood and fallacy ho,
And follow me to the place where I'll go.

Drinking Wine (XIII)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Along with each other two friends oft stay;
Their mindsets and funs are different for aye.
The one is often in the drunken state;
The other's sober a year all the way.
The sober and the drunk smile face to face;
They don't understand each other in th' case.
How foolish the sticklers and vulgar guys!
The free natural indulgence is more wise.
I want to tell the men who love to swill;
Be glad at night in candela at will !

Drinking Wine (XIV)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Old pals quite admires the bent of mine;
They invite me to be along with wine.
We swill on firewoods under a pine tree;
After many cups all became drunk we.
Country fellows and I babble so free;
When drinking we ignore order in glee.
Drunk I do not know my existing here,
All the worldly possessions are not dear.
When I'm drunk, into a trance falls my mind.
The wine in the pot has deep sense I find.

Drinking Wine (XV)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Short of helpers I live a life so poor;
All around my thatched hut grow the shrubs more.
I can clearly see birds fly in the sky;
But so drear here's no footstep far and nigh.
That vast universe's long and far, it's told;
Folks are few to live a hundred years old.
The fleeting time makes people aged away;
My temples' hair has become white and gray.
If I can not live the life high and low,
Contrary to wish I regret in woe.

Drinking Wine (XVI)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
I have made few friends since childhood of mine;
Only I've read the six classic works fine.
Now that I am nearly forty years old;
For years of seclusion,no deed I hold.
At last I'm in the life hungry and poor,
Suffering from th' life starved and cold still more,
The storm often sweep my bleak thatched cottage;
The front yard's full of weeds hard to manage.
Throwing on a coat I sit in th' long night,
Wishing cocks crow to bring me the dawn light.
There is no bosom friend here by my side.
My emotion to none I can confide.

Drinking Wine (XVII)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
In the front yard grow the orchids at ease;
With the fragrances they await the breeze.
When the gently breeze light blows over here,
Which are weeds and which are orchids, we're clear.
On and on forth gradually I get stray;
Conforming to nature I'll find my way.
Now I have come to my sense, I should go;
Remenber gone are birds, aside's the bow.
Drinking Wine (XVIII)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Born the scholar Yang Xiong loves to drink wine,
Too poor to afford wine he can but pine.
He's glad to have those who love to learn more;
They oft come here with wine to study lore.
Filling the flagon he drinks the wine up;
Anwsering questions he wines cup by cup.
Sometims he keeps silence not to speak there;
Is that for he dare not say state affair?
He who ponders things so well is kind man;
When he'd keep silence he does as he can.
Drinking Wine (XIX)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
I suffered from long hunger in the past,
To be an official I gave up the farm tool.
Poor rest can't make me healthy well at last;
The hunger and cold make me very cruel.
When aging I'm nearly thirty years old;
Indeed I feel very shamed in my heart.
To preserve my figrue faithful and bold,
I homed to rest in the farm I did part.
The sun and moon are moving slow, gone' s time
The twelve years have passed since my return.
The world so wide and far looks prime,
Yet Yang Zhu stands still and mewl in concern.
Though I don't have the joy to spend cash free,
The wine can be enough to console me.
Drinking Wine (XX)
By TAO Yuanming
Tr. JOHN ZHAO Yizhong
Fu Xi and Shen Nong are yet deceased long.
There're not few true men among worldly throng.
Confucius of Lu was keen, zealous and sure;
He could mend it and make it pure once more.
Though the peace and boom have recovered few.
Rites and music appear with a look new.
The country of Rites and music declined,
Waning until Qin the six states combined.
What sin have the books of poetry and lore?
Instantly burnt to ashes were books more.
At start of Han some old Confucian men
The classics did so hard teach and explain.
But since the finish of the Eastern Han,
So close to the six classics is no man.
All runs after fortune and fame all day.
None learns how to run the state all the way.
If I do not swill here so fain again,
would th‘ cover-chief on my head not be vain
What I said above are all fallacy.
May you all understand and forgive me.
