Snow Falling on Jiaxue Hall
By Xue Fei (Henan)
By Jiaxue Hall's side, West Flow Lake bears cold waves rippling light,
Eaves lift last year's cloud wadding, weaving lines of lonely verse.
Ancient willows by the hall hang silk-like branches,
Iron boughs glazed with frost stand sharp as writing brushes.
Crabapple stands alone—no more warm breath to melt the frost on brows.
Dreams carry wisp of faint fragrance, winding 'round pillows into sweet tapestries,
Snow blankets the slanting bench, wind traces carving vicissitudes unseen.
North wind sweeps through the hall, swirling dust and frost from Cangye Pavilion,
Whispers buried deep in years become untold stories of days gone by.
Jackdaws brush snow shadows lightly, reed catkins stretch boundless pale,
Snow falls silently, wind stirs sorrows old.
That year's smile in snow, dotted with plum blossoms' cold fragrance,
A wisp of pure scent lingers still, winding 'round the hall's corridor.
Wind and snow cannot break the old covenant—original heart remains unchilled,
Light and shadow flow in dreams, still flickering before my eyes.
Meeting is a sparrow pausing on the eave, pecking snow and singing softly,
Parting is the cold melting in palms, touching fingers into lingering grief.
Unspoken goodbyes drift far away with the snow,
I am like a lonely sparrow in snow, lost without a guide.
Once I came treading snow, chanting verses of snow,
Yet in the years' wind and snow, I've lost my way back home.
Note: Jiaxue Hall, a small scenic structure, is located north of Cangye Pavilion Road by West Flow Lake in Zhengzhou, adjacent to West Flow Lake in the east and Baihua Garden in the west. Xue Fei's couplet for the hall reads: "Bright moon shines on the beautiful garden, hiding four seasons' splendor; Flower snow lingers around Tang and Song poetry charm, preserving three lifetimes' grace."
