The Law of Nature

The purple-red building
was the sky’s seal,
stamped alone
upon a gray curtain.
Until another building
quietly stepped into its glass.
Light began to take its first steps,
Strolling
from one window
to another.
Standing side by side,
they filtered
the ash from each other’s shadows.
Not one swallowing the other,
not fire covering fire.
The trees learned a new softness.
The clouds turned white again.
Even the shadow beneath the overpass
slowly opened its fingers.
In the breath of May
a promise lay hidden.
So purely blue, you stood at the center—
no need to be bluer,
no possibility of being paler.
Like dusk entering the river,
like moonlight leaning against the wall,
like, in my long life,
a stretch of silence
finally, unexpectedly,
being lit.
