Ruby Rain

To a Mother
May I call you Mother?
I know you are not my own,
yet in your gentle gaze
I see my mother’s tender mercy shining.
In your quiet smile
I feel the warm sun of winter days.
Upon each strand of silver hair
glimmers a lifetime of her toil—
the weathered grace of bygone years.
How I long to sit beside you,
to hear the stories you could tell forever,
to share small talk and idle chatter,
the simple warmth of home.
My own mother waited for her wandering son,
but I was always too busy.
Now she rests in Paradise.
And here, before you,
tears rise unbidden in my eyes.
So let me pretend, just for this moment,
that I am your child.
Softly, slowly,
let me call you Mother once again.
