Man lives between the earth and sky,
With grass and trees in spring and fall.
The rich and great leave names on high,
While humble doors have few who call.
Mount Tai soars thousands feet in pride,
A swan’s feather is light and small.
What’s heavy or light, since ancient tide,
Is judged by historians after all.
Great lords who shape a dynasty,
Their deeds on silk and bamboo shine.
But common men, in poverty,
Their bones in dust, their graves untwined.
On Hall of Heroes, none can see
The trace of a nameless line.
Yet walk the alleys, you may find
Not all are dust beneath the wind:
A mother leaps in water blind,
To save her grandchild, none rescind.
A teacher shields from falling brick,
His blood soaks through his coat so thin.
A doctor, fevered, tired, and sick,
Guards sickroom doors till dawn begins.
They seek no history’s grand acclaim,
But think of neighbors, kith, and kin.
A single lamp, a tiny flame,
Can warm a dark, cold village inn.
One shoulder bears the wind and rain,
For all a family’s hope and pain.
The world’s a flood, a mighty wave—
Few rise or fall as they behave.
Some, caught in chaos, drift like clouds,
No wish to die among the crowds.
Yet some on high stages pretend,
To buy false fame with a borrowed end.
After a thousand years, who still
Can tell the pure from tainted will?
Merit changes with the ruler’s hand,
Inscriptions shift like drifting sand.
I sigh for common souls: their love
Is deepest—when they leave, above,
The hall grows cold, the child cries low,
The widow’s lamp burns faint and slow.
The courtyard’s still, no dog’s bark heard,
Each neighbor’s tear, each withered bird.
To state, they leave no trace or sign,
But to their home, they are Mount Tai.
The world’s true weight—is it divine
On ministers and kings to lie?
If you would ask what life is worth,
Look not to fame, but love and truth.
Keep but a fire within your breast,
Be true to those before your rest.
And if no one remembers you,
The hills and streams still hold their hue.
A thousand million tiny lights—
Together warm these mortal nights.

no mires fama, sino amor y verdad.
