Li Weiguang (b.1971)
Born in Meixian, Guangdong Province, Li Weiguang is a renowned contemporary Chinese oil painter.
In 2004, he founded ART64 Space on Shamian Island. In 2015, he established the Li Weiguang Art Museum inside a century-old Republican-era building on Shamian Island, Guangzhou. Relying on physical exhibition venues, he devotes himself to the display, research and cross-cultural exchange of contemporary art.
Over more than thirty years of artistic creation, he has long rooted his practice in the integration and collision of Eastern and Western art. Drawing creative inspiration from traditional Chinese culture, he reinterprets the spiritual essence of Chinese civilization through oil painting, a Western medium, building a bridge for mutual learning between Chinese and Western arts. His artistic vein is distinct and constantly evolving. His early bodies of work include the Memory and Occasional Scenes series, as well as old photograph and opera figure series. His recent creations cover poetic Chinese landscape oil paintings, Travel Notes of A Guang, and golden-lustre oil paintings. During the pandemic, he completed three thematic series: Joy, Zen Mood and Imagery. Throughout all phases, he persistently explores the profound integration of Western oil painting techniques and Eastern aesthetic spirit.
In terms of artistic expression, his creations are grounded in exquisite Western realist oil painting skills. He delicately depicts figures, landscapes and objects derived from traditional culture, endowing canvases with striking visual authenticity and substantial texture. Beyond realism, he infuses the freehand spirit of Chinese ink wash painting, adopting compositions that interweave void and solid forms paired with subtle, vivid brushstrokes to embed his philosophical reflections on scenes and moods.
His works boast the rich layers and precise rendering of light and shadow typical of Western oil painting, while permeated with the unique poetic grace and ethereal charm of Eastern aesthetics. The interplay of solid form and void imagery lends profound ideological depth and interpretive richness to his paintings.
This integrated Sino-Western artistic trait stands out prominently in his iconic opera painting series. He skillfully fuses traditional opera characters with modern artistic language. Through gorgeous patterns on opera costumes and inner tension embodied in characters’ postures, his works imply an in-depth dialogue between cultural inheritance and the spirit of the times, reaching an artistic realm of "perfect unity of form and spirit".
The interweaving of realistic depiction and illusory ambience in his paintings satisfies audiences’ pursuit of visual beauty while provoking profound contemplation on culture, history and life, fully demonstrating the diverse potential and vigorous vitality of oil painting within the contemporary Chinese cultural context.
