He Nai’an, born in 1940 in the former Qinzhou of Guangdong Province (now Qinzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region). His aliases include Natural Person, Village Rustic Hermit and Cultivator of Karmic Fruits. In his childhood, he learned the Gaohu and Erhu under Lao Zhiren.
In 1953, he was admitted to the China Academy of the Arts, majoring in Erhu with elective courses in composition, conducting and musical work analysis.
He graduated in 1962 and was assigned to the Art Troupe of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, joining the Communist Party of China the same year.

Shortly before his graduation in 1962, the China National Symphony Orchestra had already offered him a formal position. However, he was required to serve as a cultural soldier in the PLA. That same year, he became a CPC member. Later, a fire broke out, completely burning all his musical instruments, original compositions, graduation certificate, performance stills, medical records and every written document he owned. There were witnesses to the blaze, and audio recordings serve as evidence of the incident.
In 1962, he was transferred back to Beijing for a secondment at the North China Electric Power Bureau under the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power. He worked at the Cultural Palace of the Working People east of Tiananmen Square, overseeing artistic performances held across Beijing’s ten major parks for International Workers’ Day (May 1st) and National Day (October 1st). The very first stage amid the trees on the eastern side of the Cultural Palace was under his charge; he took full responsibility for program scheduling, arrangement and composition. Distinguished artists assisted him with creation and rehearsals, including veteran conductor Li Delun of the Central Symphony Orchestra, composer Wang Ming, and Professor Niu from the Central Conservatory of Music.

Midway through his career, fate led him to retreat into seclusion in the Zhongnan Mountains near Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, where he pursued spiritual practice. He has remained in retreat ever since his retirement.
His Compositions:
So Many Stars in the Sky, Power Plants Form Galaxies on Earth (broadcast on China National Radio)
Yearning (Erhu Solo)
Song of Health and Joy
along with other musical works.
