Notes: 1) The first line alludes to “Ode to the Tangerine” from Nine Cantos by Yuan Qu (340–278 B.C.), where the poet praises the tangerine tree as “King of trees, of the best” (tr. ZHAO Yanchun), extolling its loyal character.
2) “Lu” refers to Ji Lu (188–219), a renowned scholar of the Three Kingdoms period. The third line alludes to the tale of “Ji Lu Pocketing Tangerines”. At age six, Lu, while a guest at Shu Yuan’s home, secretly hid three tangerines in his sleeve to take home to his mother.
