深宵独坐听秋雨,
滴滴伤离绪。
长卿旧曲为谁弹,
或许天涯有客也无眠。
花香蝶梦匆匆了,
水漫西园草。
孤村冷落一灯昏,
回首山风起处荡残云。

Listening to the Rain
—In the Tune of Lady Yu
By ZHANG Wei
Tr. LYU Wenpeng & LI Xiaoli
Alone at dead of night, I hear fall rain —
Each drop awakens parting pain.
O for whom is played Changqing's ancient tune?
Perhaps afar, a sleepless soul with me shares the same moon.
Butterfly dreams with flower scents fleet away;
West Garden drowned, grasses decay.
In a lone, cold village, one lamp burns dim;
I gaze back — where the hill wind sweeps ragged clouds on the rim.
Notes:
1) Changqing was the courtesy name of Sima Xiangru (179 B.C.–117 B.C.), a Western Han poet and musician. The tune here refers to his melancholy melody.
2) “Butterfly Dream” refers to Zhuangzi’s (Sir Lush, 369 B.C.–286 B.C.) famous dream of being a butterfly, implying the illusory and fleeting nature of life’s joy.
3) West Garden: A common poetic image, originally referring to the literati gathering place during the Wei dynasty (220-265), later evoking lost, joyful gardens of the past.
