Xinjiang (seven places)
(Chinese New Romance)
A paradise of paradise
Orange, yellow, green, blue, purple,
It stains all the Shen Mountains and stains the Great River.
It was suspected of turning over the color palette,
The brilliance evinced the vicissitudes.

Comments:
Contemporary poet Tian Yizhi Shi's seven-piece poem "Xinjiang" reconstructs the geographic perception of Xinjiang in inkjet-like color imagery, completing a leap from visual impact to temporal philosophy in just four sentences. Let me explain and appreciate it sentence by sentence.
Explanation by sentence
First sentence: orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
The opening sentence is simply a rainbow of colors, without any verbs or modifications, as if a complete spectrum of colors were suddenly unfolded before the reader. This "list-style" writing, which is extremely rare in classical poetry, breaks the implicit boundaries of traditional imagery and bombards it with naked colors like modern paintings. The seven words, which read sharply and emphatically, simulate the first impressions given by the Danxia landscape, multicolored beaches, and lakes of Qanas in Xinjiang - not the landscape, but the colors.
Second sentence: Dying all the Shen Mountains and dying the Great River
The two words "dye" are poetic eyes. The first dye gave color a proactive, almost violent power - not that the mountain dyed the color, but that the color "dyed the mountain out." The second "dye" repeated the force of advance, extending the force from the mountains to the rivers. The terms "god mountain" and "great river" are simple and very grand. Between Tianshan, Kunlun, Altai and the Tarim River, readers fill themselves with the bones and blood of Xinjiang. This sentence completes the transition from specific colors to large spaces.
Third sentence: suspected of turning over the color palette
The blade of the pen turned from reality to reality, from the scene to the feeling. The word "suspected" drops open, bringing out the poet's subjective assumptions, both to the extremely brilliant explanation of the first two sentences and to inject dynamic chance into the picture. "Rolling over the color palette" is a modern metaphor that compares the results of eons of geological evolution to an impromptu accident in an artist's studio. This way of measuring the creation of the heavens and the earth on the scale of man reveals a naive and poetic zest.
Fourth sentence: The glow of the rainbow changes the course of time
The last sentence is the deepest line in the whole poem. "Shimmering" is a metaphor for color palette, turning static colors into flowing light and shadows, and the picture has a bright and vibrant feel. When the word "transforming the past" comes out, the tone of the whole poem suddenly rises - the rolled-up colors are not thin brilliant, but the glow of the years itself. Seven colors have been given the weight of time: Danxia is a sediment of the sea and the fields of the desert, and the colors of the Gobi are a thousand years of sand and wind. One word, "transformation," completes the ultimate sublimation from space to time, from vision to philosophy.
Combined appreciation
The most prominent artistic achievement of this poem lies in the pervasive color fantasies. The poet abandoned white paintings of the scenery of Xinjiang, abstracting the entire region into a huge canvas, and remodeling it with a torrent of colors. This style of writing chimes with the Chinese classical poetry of "disfiguring and resembling" - to leave the shackles of physical form and instead capture a more essential beauty.
Structured, the four lines of the poem exhibit a delicate "continuous suspension": the first sentence is a static display of color, the second sentence is the spatial expansion of color, three sentence is dynamic explosion of color, and the last sentence is time precipitation of color. From the "artificial" of the palette to the "natural" of the past, the metaphor completes a subtle displacement that ultimately elevates the wonder of nature into a metaphor for time itself.
Two of the verbs in the poem are particularly interesting. The word "dye" can mean both the gradual exposure and the complete exposure, which allows for the length of the process and the finality of the result in one word. The word "chem" is the core word of Chinese philosophy, which makes "glowing" no longer limited to the pleasure of the retina, but becomes a force actively involved in the operation of creation - beauty is a product of time alchemy.
By using the uncertain wording "suspect," the poet tears open an imaginary crack in the representation of certainty. It is this crack that makes the whole poem go from a still landscape photograph to a creative event that is taking place in the reader's mind.
At the end of the day, the poem's "Xinjiang" is both geographical and spiritual reconstruction - flowing on the overturned palette, which is not what a people sees, spanning ancient splendor and desolation.
