The Tribunal After Travel
By Hongyun
Last night,
I—an old hand at wandering—
fell asleep beneath the very eyelids
of the departure gate,
dissolving into a puddle of mud.
A 5:44 flight.
Eyes wide at 5:40.
The world spat out only a single line of ashes:
Gate. Closed.
Rome’s domes, Malta’s blue,
two thousand years of mute stone—
all utterly defeated
by a fifteen-minute nap.
I lugged my hiking bag
like a prisoner
fresh from signing his confession.
The airline said: 9:40.
Not an execution—
just a sentence to sit on a chair
until I withered into an old clock.
At last I admitted
I was no seasoned drifter.
A "veteran traveler"
is merely someone
who hasn't yet missed a flight.
At 11:48 that night,
Vancouver picked me up again.
The moon hung among the branches,
a badge of suspended sentence,
bearing no kiss of blame.
The harbor dozed deeply.
Boats leaned against boats—
a pod of weary white whales
finally swimming back
into their own bones.
"No more traveling alone,"
decreed the one
who had wished upon stars and moons
for my return.
Morning arrived.
As always, I stood by the window
and saw trees, sea, bridges,
and the damp air
leaking through the cracks—
so sweet.
Go ahead and smile to yourself.
A person capable
of misplacing even herself
could still be gathered by the world
like a fully ripened fruit,
and gently placed back
into the basket.
