A Bullet Pierces Through the Dream (Collection of Ten Poems)
Author: Wang Xingchu
A Bullet Pierces Through the Dream
Night sinks deep into the mind
Starry dreams hum tunes of peace
Peach Blossom Land is a fairyland in slumber
Blossoms bloom all the way, interwoven with endless laughter
No outlet for the confinement of daytime
Only sleep can untie the fetters of the world
Lying in the comfort of a Simmons bed
Away from the blame-shifting chaos of turbulent times
A hare flinches and dodges in the grass amid panic
A single bullet pierces straight through the dream
The nightmare stems from an online shooting tragedy
A scientist loses his life in his own residence
Shot repeatedly, his body riddled with bullets
The unknown are shot in dreams
The renowned perish in harsh reality

The Answer to Next Spring
This spring is murdered by COVID-19
Buried in new coffins amid endless dirges
Astronomical figures can no longer move heaven
The stock market falls in irrational martyrdom
Despair witnesses words from the oval mouth
The shadow of the Stars and Stripes signs decrees
The dark green of spring withers into mortal remains
The dazzling spring breeze turns into broken antiques
Worthless and abandoned by the world
The tragedy of fleeing crowds builds new tombs by the border
The world of birdsong and blossoms runs wild into withered grass
Angels in white walk through morgues in the darkest hours
Spring itself lies in coffins, crowned by the pandemic
Next spring shall dress as a priest to bid it farewell

Bird Shadows in the Afterglow
The setting sun stoops with the feebleness of old age
Seeking its final path home
A line of bird shadows sweeps across the afterglow
Accompanying the wrinkled clouds all over the sky
Lost in the crumbling dusk
The firmament wearies of the daylight glare
And begins to rule the universe with utter darkness
Flocks of circling birds are wandering clouds
Finding no branches to rest upon
For the entire forest has burned to ashes
All wings are worn out with exhaustion
The shadow of an old bird plummets from the sky
Crashing to the ground with tragic warmth
Its wandering footsteps resonate in perfect empathy
With the homeless drifts roaming the streets

May’s Domino Effect
The first quarter collapses in unforeseen ruin
The dominoes of the second quarter fall one after another
May crumbles completely in crashing chaos
Early summer lingers in a half-dead stupor
People trapped at home suffocate and grow frantic
Defying bans, they take to the streets with protest signs
Stock market indicators pierce the heart of the market
Endless lines of the unemployed stretch across the globe
Virus lingers in the tents of wanderers
Frivolous mouths spout endless nonsense daily
Countless statistics shatter all hope online
Truth and falsehood blur in boundless confusion
May sings not a final elegy
But witnesses utterly dilapidated days
Its murmuring dreams drift toward late autumn
We await the end of collapsing dominoes in November

Dust-Covered Bloodstains
Mankind once praised horrific wars
As if praising maidens and twinkling stars
Dreadful wars
This old witch, has bewitched all humanity
Undoubtedly
Those who come to mourn before dust-covered bloodstains
Have finally tasted the terror of its reign
Scenery is faint, peace is fleeting
Failing the lingering souls of the departed
Such forgetfulness embodies humanity’s ancient sorrow
Man-made monuments rise from trench ruins
Supersonic warplanes sing paeans to artillery fire
A false paradise bestows grace upon dusty bloodstains
Surging before our eyes
Are the rusted years and flickering candlelight of the 20th century

Your Majesty, Restrain Your Wrath
This land is no utopian paradise
Yet emperors are effortlessly found everywhere
The white imperial palace nests flocks of crows
Residency rights renew every four years by contract
A mighty lord rides a fierce white-maned steed
Galloping wildly along the oval racetrack
The horse’s tail stirs up waves of cheering fanfare
Every day the emperor issues imperial edicts to loyal ministers
Complacent and eager to don new glorious robes
The whole nation searches high and low for this monarch
A child smiles and points straight at the palace: Look —
It is that naked old man with nothing on his body
Flying into a towering rage, the naked emperor
Spits and roars: Fake news! All fake news!

The Golden Gate Bridge Roars in Turmoil
Bathed in sunlight, the orange Golden Gate Bridge
Bursts forth in furious resistance
For the unbearable 8 minutes and 46 seconds of suffocation
For the truth that Black lives equally matter
Gun sights aim steadily from the White House
Tweets spiral into frantic hysteria
Trembling footsteps linger in the basement
Chants outside ignite sparks upon the bridge
Turbulent tides of anger surge across the deck
The sacred power of peace fortifies the bridge’s frame
Reason suspends hope for racial harmony
Raised fists hold high the banner of equality
COVID-19 plagues all humanity
Racism’s virus slaughters countless innocents

Today’s Neck, History’s Head
A neck is brutally crushed and killed today
In the suffocating weight of 8 minutes and 46 seconds
Life perishes amid lost breath
The head of history is severed by justice
Evil crimes face severe reckoning
Corrupt bodies fall into eternal infamy
When all history is rewritten as modern narrative
Revised and defined by the victorious
We stand aside as sober witnesses
Holding high the banner of clarity and truth

Reveries of November
— Written in June 2020. At that time, I envisioned a promising America in November filled with hope. Yet when November came, those beautiful reveries never came true, and the nation fell into deeper distress. (Postscript)
We walk through unchanged woods
Through the fading bloom of roses
Deserted squares regain earthly vitality
Grand ballot celebrations echo across the land
All of America awaits this pivotal day
The imperial throne of the White House awaits a new master
Masks become outdated relics of the past
Grief over 8 minutes and 46 seconds turns to compassion
Wounds of racial discrimination pray for gradual healing
Abandoning social distance barriers
People shake hands, embrace, kiss, and reconnect heart to heart
Though the coronavirus still lurks and covets
Coveting the reopening of frozen lands
Coveting the vibrant joy after surviving disaster
Fertile fruits regrow on once desolate soil
Sunlight bathes communities once ravaged by the pandemic
New life unfolds a brand-new blueprint
Dreams of November cover the land with hopeful posters

Dandelion Aria
Gently departing from its upright mother stem
Floating afar with peaceful whispers
Fearless through day and night
Roaming heaven and earth for boundless freedom
The earth belongs to others
The clouds belong to others
Only its traveling pack bears the weight of history
Drinking dewdrops, feasting on starlight, dwelling in wilderness
Bathed in sunrise and sunset, singing elegies
Its shadow flies beyond palaces and fairy realms
A free spirit entrusted to rootless soil
Journeying eagerly through life’s miracles
Several dark shadows stagger forward
Shattering wandering bones across the ground
Flower shadows scatter and break
Feathered souls drift endlessly

Poetic Chronicle of Turbulent Times, Conscience in a Foreign Land
— A Critique of Wang Xingchu’s Poetry Suite A Bullet Pierces Through the Dream
By Long Dada
Overseas Chinese-language poetry derives its greatest value from documenting the times and revealing truth with the sobriety of an onlooker and the agony of a witness. Composed in 2020, Wang Xingchu’s ten-poem suite A Bullet Pierces Through the Dream continues the realist vein of his writings about the pandemic. Set against multiple crises sweeping across American society between May and June, the suite weaves together pandemic catastrophe, racial conflicts, political absurdity, the collapse of people’s livelihoods and elegies of individual fates, forming a miniature poetic chronicle of turbulent times on foreign soil. Rejecting empty sentimentalism, the suite is structured around multiple confrontations: dreams against reality, illusions of prosperity against harsh truths of chaos, and myths of freedom against brutal facts. Sharp social criticism, compassionate humanistic sentiments and refined modern poetic craft converge in these works, fully embodying the literary conscience of an overseas poet rooted in reality and daring to face the truth.
The most distinctive trait of this collection lies in its use of individual, intimate perceptions to bear witness to the sweeping pains of an era. Personal dreams, visions and inner emotions serve as prisms refracting social chaos. The opening poem A Bullet Pierces Through the Dream introduces a striking core image. Mental confinement in daylight and endless strife in troubled times render peaceful dreams the sole refuge. Yet even within dreams, one cannot escape the terror of a bullet tearing through slumber and fatal gun violence.
“The nameless are shot in dreams; the renowned perish for real.”
This concise contrast blurs the boundary between illusory personal nightmares and real-world tragedies, articulating the collective panic that no one can evade amid catastrophe, setting a sombre, melancholy tone for the entire suite.
Breaking free from purely private emotions, the poet extends his writing to multi-layered dimensions of society, politics and human nature, gradually dismantling the veneer of civilisation in Western societies. The Answer Hidden in Next Spring subverts the traditional uplifting imagery of spring. The poet states plainly that spring has been “murdered” by COVID-19: greenery withers, spring breezes lose their radiance, and countless lives fade away. The once vibrant world of birdsong and blossoms turns into a land dotted with fresh graves. Using the demise of a season as a metaphor for societal collapse, the poet pierces the illusion of a flourishing age, laying bare the insignificance of human life and desolation of the times amid disaster. May Dominoes offers an unflinching documentary account of America’s social predicament in 2020. Economic meltdown, widespread hardship, ineffective restrictions and rampant disorder prevail. Unemployment, the virus and falsehoods spread hand in hand. The domino-style breakdown represents the comprehensive collapse of social order, economic systems and public faith. The writing is realistic, incisive and carries immense documentary value for the era.
Political absurdity and hypocrisy of power form the core critical theme of the suite. Written in a playful yet acerbic tone, Your Majesty, Restrain Your Anger deconstructs the absurd essence of Western-style democracy. Four-year electoral cycles are likened to monarchs renewing their reigns, and political campaigns to imperial hunting tours. The monarch adored by the masses is ultimately an “emperor in new clothes”, exposed by a child’s casual remark. The furious cry of “Fake news! Fake news!” uses irony to lay bare political hypocrisy and the whitewashing of harsh realities. Beneath the playful language lies penetrating commentary on reality, vividly capturing the absurdity of political farces. Dried Bloodstains revisits the eternal themes of war and violence. Humanity glorifies warfare and reveres artillery, yet forgets the souls lost amid trenches and ruins. Dried bloodstains have never faded; they are merely concealed by illusions of prosperity. The poem embodies the poet’s profound reflection on violence, hegemony and collective amnesia of history.
Confronted with racial injustice and worldly suffering, these verses brim with compassion for all people and an unwavering commitment to justice. When America’s racial equality movement erupted in 2020, the poet based in San Francisco bore witness to the pursuit of justice and resistance through his writing. Golden Gate Bridge Roars Amid the Surge personifies the landmark, turning it into a witness and voice for equality and justice. The agony of eight minutes and forty-six seconds of suffocation, and the weight of Black lives, transform into a tide of rage sweeping across the city. The poet astutely identifies humanity’s twin viruses: COVID-19 ravages physical bodies, while racial discrimination fractures the human spirit, demonstrating profound insight and broad vision. Today’s Neck, History’s Verdict uses condensed, mournful language to elevate the tragedy of an individual’s fatal restraint to a historical judgment. Savage violence will eventually be held accountable, and evil deeds will live on in infamy, manifesting the poet’s cross-regional, cross-racial humanistic pursuit of justice.
Meanwhile, the poems blend rational contemplation with philosophical reflection on life, balancing tenderness and sharpness with powerful tension. Contemplations for November contrasts hopes forged in June with subsequent harsh reality. The poet once anticipated the fading of the pandemic, the dissolution of divisions and the return of warmth to the world. The stark gap between beautiful expectations and brutal reality deepens the poetry’s compassion and helplessness. The concluding piece Ode to Dandelions takes the dandelion as the poet’s self-metaphor: drifting rootless with the wind, dwelling among dew and wilderness after enduring vicissitudes. Though seemingly free and untethered, it bears the weight of history and fate. Its wandering feathered soul and shattered floral silhouette depict not only the wandering plight of overseas migrants, but also the fate of countless insignificant beings amid chaos, adding a gentle, desolate undertone of life to this sharp suite of realistic poems.
Artistically, the suite features precise imagery, stark contrasts and an interplay of the virtual and tangible. Layered juxtapositions — dreams versus reality, spring versus death, prosperity versus desolation, hope versus disillusionment, myths of freedom versus violent reality — continuously deepen thematic meaning. Core motifs including the bullet, withered spring, dominoes, roaring bridge and dandelion run through the whole work, embodying the traumas of the age in concrete form. The language is plain yet piercing, direct and powerful. Free from ornate embellishment, every line strikes the heart, balancing documentary authenticity and literary grace.
In summary, A Bullet Pierces Through the Dream marks an advancement in Wang Xingchu’s pandemic documentary poetry. Living abroad yet caring for all humanity, the poet records turbulent times, exposes absurdity, grieves over suffering and upholds justice with the Chinese language. These verses preserve one-of-a-kind memories of an era, showcasing the realistic strength and humanistic depth of overseas Chinese-language poetry. More importantly, wielding words as blades and poetic sentiment as beacons, the poet safeguards literary sincerity and the intellectual conscience demanded by the times.
