Snowy peaks afar seem low, and clouds fly;
I feel like scaling a stair to the sky.
In the pine grove, to and fro children play;
After rain, Eagle Mound finds tourists stay.
At dusk, cattle and sheep come home to rest;
In the woods, birds fly, seeking out their nest.
How blest that peace reigns in China today!
Never forget once war-horses did neigh.

Kalajun Grassland
By Zhao Ying
Tr. Shu Enjiang
I gaze—clouds drift, snow peaks bow low and pale;
I climb the height—a stairway to the sky.
Through pines on meads, young children romp and hail;
Rain-washed Eagle's Perch enthralls each passerby.
At dusk, the flocks and herds wind home in streams;
Woodbirds dart back to find their nests and rest.
How blest our land, now hushed of warring screams—
Yet still we hear the warhorse's neighing zest?
Notes:
1. Kalajun Grassland: on the northern slopes of the Heavenly Mountains (Tian Shan), Xinjiang, with snowy peaks visible in the distance.
2. Eagle Mound: a famed viewpoint in Kalajun, named for the eagles that circle overhead.
