New tangerines still bear a touch of frost,
Their rind breaks open to sweet nectar’s flow.
Now we can enjoy them — we’ve got the most;
Their scent outshines Wang’s oranges long ago.
*
Cool, tender segments scent the heart and breast;
With wine they make a most delightful treat.
Had Yang Guifei these golden fruits possessed,
No lychees would have raced on post roads fleet.
Notes:
1) Wang means Wang Xizhi (303-361 or 321-379), the great calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, wrote in his Note on Presenting Oranges: “Before frost falls, oranges cannot be had in plenty.”
2) Yang Guifei (or Yang Yuhuan, 719-756) was the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. She was famous for her fondness of fresh lychees, which were delivered to the palace at great speed by relay post riders from the south.
