万树敷荣古战场，
秋深无处不金黄。
借来海雨天风力，
化作东瓯王者香。

嘉果方临秋熟处，
奇香已满海边城。
晓来一阵风过岭，
疑是当年橘颂声。

秋实经霜品位殊，
山前山后讶垂珠。
一从物竞东南美，
多少舟车赴桔都。

Ode to Linhai Tangerines: A Trio of Seven-Character Quatrains

On ancient battlefields trees stand arrayed;
Late autumn paints all hills in golden glow.
They borrow sea rain and sky winds as aid,
And breathe the royal fragrance of Dong’ou.

When fine fruits ripen ’neath the autumn sky,
Their rare perfume has filled the coastal town.
At dawn a breeze across the hills doth sigh,
As Qu Yuan’s Ode to Tangerines drifts down.

Frost-kissed fine fruits excel in taste, we know;
Like pearls they hang on each hill up and down.
Since all these southeast fruits outshine and glow;
Carts and boats throng to this tangerine town.

Dong’ou, an ancient geographical name in China, referring mainly to present-day Linhai, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, a celebrated hometown of premium tangerines.
