Tasting Linhai Tangerines
By YUE Hongkun
Tr. LYU Wenpeng
Linhai’s countless tangerines—sweet
And fragrant, a hundred mouths’ treat.
Biting one, I miss my dear Mum;
Like Lu’s son, I'll go home with some.
Note: Lu’s son refers to Ji Lu (陆绩, 188–219), a renowned scholar of the Three Kingdoms period. The last line alludes to the tale of “Ji Lu Pocketing Tangerines”. At age six, Lu, while a guest at Shu Yuan’s home, secretly hid three tangerines in his sleeve to take home to his mother.
