In dreams, oft stay Bai Causeway's mist and rain;
To seek joy, I come to Suzhou again.
Banks white‑walled, with poles and oars boats they row;
Arches watch a rill of green water flow.
Deep shade and lush willows screen fishing bays;
Afar, blue Tiger Hill's veiled by light haze.
I recall painted boats, lamp‑lit fairs bright;
Wu speech soft, oars creaking, a tender night.

Revisiting Seven-Li Shantang

The misty rain of Bai Causeway haunts my rest;
Again in Gusu I roam with boundless zest.
Past whitewashed walls on either bank, poles and sculls glide;
Through arching bridges, jade-green waters gently slide.
Deep-shaded garden willows veil the fishing creek;
Dusky hills and gauzy mist hide Tiger Hill's peak.
I recall the painted boats, the lamplit market fair;
Wu speech, the creak of oars — the tender night is there.
Notes:
1. Seven‑Li Shantang and Bai Causeway: two names for the same place in Suzhou. Seven‑Li Shantang, a collective name for both the canal and the street; "Seven‑Li" refers to its length—about seven li (3.6 km)—from Changmen Gate to Tiger Hill. "Bai Causeway" honors Bai Juyi (772‑846), the Tang poet who, as Prefect of Suzhou in 825, had the causeway built.
2. Wu speech: the Wu dialect of Suzhou and nearby areas, famed for its soft, gentle tones.

LYU Wenpeng, a native of Tianshui, Gansu Province; Associate Professor of English and MA Supervisor at Northwest Normal University, Director of Chinese Culture Translation and International Promotion Committee, of Chinese Classics Bilinguals' Association, and of Gansu Provincial Translators' Association. She specializes in applied linguistics and studies of translator behavior and of translation of Chinese classics.
