莽荡天山列画屏，

嵯峨寒翠插苍冥。

忽惊玉宇飞鹰健，

谁遣银簪定海宁。

缱绻野薇迎客放，

殷勤白桦向人青。

最怜一鉴瑶池美，

万古仙居早勒铭。

The Heavenly Range spreads like a vast screen;

Piercing the sky, peaks are steep and cold-green.

On high, an eagle suddenly does soar;

Who sent that hairpin to calm the sea's roar?

To greet the guests wild roses fondly blow;

Kindly, birches to tourists their green show.

Most dear is Jade Pool, a mirror-like view,

Where gods abode, whose praise is graven true.

Mount Tianshan’s Heavenly Lake

The vast Tianshan, a brocade screen unrolled,

Whose emerald crags pierce through the azure sky.

An eagle startles heaven's vault—so bold—

What hand sent down this silver pin to tie

The waves? Wild roses, clinging, greet the guest;

White birches lean in green to travelers' eyes.

Yet fairest is this pool of jade at rest—

Immortals' home, whose fame in marble lies.

Notes:

1. Heavenly Lake (Tianchi): Nestled on the northern slope of Bogda Peak, the highest peak in the eastern range of the Heavenly (Tianshan) Mountains, Xinjiang, China.

2. Heavenly Range: Heavenly Mountains, a majestic range stretching across western China, the legendary home of the Queen Mother of the West and the immortals, and in myth, the bridge between heaven and earth.

3. Who sent that hairpin to calm the sea's roar: alluding to the tale of the Queen Mother of the West, who cast her jade hairpin into the sea to subdue a monster. The hairpin became an elm tree, still standing alone by Heavenly Lake—called the "Sea-Stabilizing Needle."

4. Jade Pool: the poetic name for Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), associated with the Queen Mother of the West.
